Switching from GoDaddy?

Why Boston businesses leave GoDaddy.

Cheap hosting is cheap for a reason — you do the work, on servers packed with thousands of other sites. Here’s the difference, line by line.

Want the long version? What “managed” actually covers.

Why it matters here

Online isn’t the same as working.

Most hosts will tell you they monitor your site. What they usually mean is that something asks your server whether it’s awake. That misses the way WordPress actually breaks: the page still answers, it just isn’t your website any more.

A Back Bay firm’s contact form can stop sending and a Seaport restaurant’s booking page can serve a database error to every visitor, both while the server keeps answering politely. In a market this competitive nobody emails to tell you — they just click the next result.

Checked every minute

Not every five. From more than one region, with confirmation re-checks so a blip never becomes a false alarm — confirmed downtime reaches you by email in about two minutes.

We read the page, not just the reply

A WordPress site with a database error answers a monitor with a normal “200 OK”. We recognise those failure screens by name, so a site that came back broken counts as down — and the alert says what we found.

How the checks work

On stores, we watch the buying path

Catalogue, products from the database, the cart and whether a payment method is still being offered, and the checkout page — every five minutes, read-only, with no test orders.

Where we work

Serving businesses across Greater Boston.

We work with small businesses and professional firms throughout the metro — from the Financial District to the streetcar suburbs. Everything is handled remotely, which is how it would work with a Boston host too; the difference is that you can get one of us on the phone.

  • Back Bay & South End
law, finance, design studios, and independent retail
  • Seaport & Fort Point
    agencies, startups, and restaurant groups
  • Downtown & the Financial District
    law, accountancy, and architecture practices
  • Cambridge & Somerville
    labs, consultancies, and owner-run shops
  • Brookline & Newton
    medical, dental, and legal practices
  • Fenway & Longwood
    healthcare, research, and hospitality
  • Jamaica Plain & Dorchester
    makers, cafés, and neighbourhood services
  • Charlestown & East Boston
    trades, marine, and small manufacturers
  • Quincy & the South Shore
    contractors, clinics, and family businesses

Not on the list? We serve all of Greater Boston — and the rest of New England. Part of our Massachusetts coverage. Also serving Providence.

The most competitive search market in New England.

Boston has the deepest bench of professional services in the region — law, healthcare, finance, consulting, architecture — and in most categories a dozen firms of similar size are competing for the same searches. That changes what a website failure costs. Elsewhere a slow page is an annoyance; here it is the reason someone chose the firm listed below you.

It also means the bar for “fine” is higher. Server-level caching and tuned PHP are what actually move page speed, and both are our job rather than yours — no plugin you install will do as much, and on a site that has spent years on cheap shared hosting the difference is usually the largest single improvement available.

The second half is not being quietly broken. An expired certificate throwing a browser warning, a contact form that stopped sending after a plugin update, a checkout that fails only on mobile — none of those announce themselves, and all of them cost you enquiries you never learn about. Checks run every minute from more than one region and read the page a visitor would actually see, because a WordPress site with a database error still answers a monitor with a cheerful “200 OK”.

And we are an hour away rather than an ocean away. That matters less for the work, which is remote either way, than it does for the conversation — when something needs a decision you talk to the people who run the platform, in your own time zone, about a market they know.

Moving is the easy part

What moving off GoDaddy actually looks like.

It is free, we do it for you, and your site stays up the whole time. Here is the whole process, so “no downtime” is something you can check rather than something you have to take our word for.

  1. You send us a login, we do the rest

We take a full copy of the site — files, database, uploads, plugins, themes — and rebuild it on our servers. Nothing changes on your live site while this happens, and it keeps serving from your old host exactly as it did before.

  2. We check it before you see it

The copy runs on a private address first. We walk the pages that matter — the homepage, contact form, and on a store the catalogue, cart and checkout — and fix anything the move disturbed. Most sites need nothing; older ones sometimes need a plugin updated to work on a current PHP version.

  3. You look at it

You get the private link and check it yourself. This is the point to say “the fonts look wrong” or “that form goes to the wrong inbox”, and nothing is switched over until you are happy.

  4. We switch the domain over

One DNS change points your domain at the new copy. Both copies are live and identical through the changeover, so visitors reach a working site whichever one they land on — that is what “no downtime” actually means. SSL is issued and renewing before the switch, so no one meets a certificate warning.

  5. We watch it for you

Monitoring, nightly backups and updates start immediately. We keep an eye on the first days closely, because that is when anything the move missed shows up — and if something does, the backup from before the switch is one click away.

Most moves finish inside a day. A large store, or a site with something unusual bolted to it, can take longer — we will tell you which one you are before we start rather than after.

FAQ

Questions Boston businesses ask.

Are you actually based in Boston?
No, and we would rather say so than let you find out later. Site Schema, LLC is in East Greenwich, Rhode Island — about an hour from Boston. We work with businesses across Greater Boston, all of it handled remotely, which is how it would work with a host physically in the city too. If being able to walk into an office matters to you, we are not the right fit and we will tell you that on the first call.
Can you move my website from GoDaddy?
Yes — migration is free and we handle it for you, with no downtime. Most moves from GoDaddy or another shared host are finished within a day.
How much does managed WordPress hosting cost?
Plans start at $25/month (Solo). Studio is $35 and Growth is $50/month for busier sites. Every plan includes nightly backups, free SSL, security, and real support.
How much faster will my site actually be?
Honestly, it depends on what is slowing it down. Server-level caching and tuned PHP fix the hosting half and usually make the largest single difference, especially on a site that has been on cheap shared hosting for years. What moving cannot fix is a homepage carrying eight megabytes of images or a stack of overlapping plugins — but we will tell you that is the problem rather than quietly selling you a bigger plan.
We are a professional firm. How do we know the site is not quietly broken?
Because you get told. Checks run every minute from more than one region and read the page a visitor would see rather than trusting the server’s reply, so a page throwing a database error counts as down. SSL is watched as well as issued. Once a week you get a plain-English summary of what is healthy and what needs a look — no dashboard to learn.
Do you support online stores (WooCommerce)?
Yes. WooCommerce runs well on our stack, and on a store the catalogue, products from the database, the cart, whether a payment method is still being offered, and the checkout page are each checked every five minutes — read-only, with no test orders. Hourly backups are available for stores that cannot lose an order.
Do I need to be technical?
No. We handle the hosting and send you plain-language updates. You focus on your business.
Where are your servers?
In US data centers on the East Coast, so Boston visitors get fast load times. Your site is monitored around the clock and backed up nightly to encrypted storage.
